Our Monday 26th October Blog Post

Good morning all!

We hope you have had a great last week and that you have a relaxing Labour day.  It’s a pretty cold day at the farm – and we hope it’s a bit warmer your place.

Super El Nino and waiting for rain
Whilst the weather has been warm over the past few days and the grass is growing well, we are looking forward to more rain (which is scheduled in the next week). We certainly can’t complain currently.

Section for sale
We have a 1 hectare section on the farm which we tried to sell a year ago.  Even though the position is  great (with lake views and less than 400m to the Piarere Ski Club) we did not get one inquiry, and we withdrew it.  With Spring here, we have decided to put it back on the market.  We are waiting until after the election before it goes on sale, but we have spent some time spreading more bark around the dairy shed entrance. We think it looks pretty cool!

Filling on the holes
For those who have followed our posts, we have posted previously about removing all our hawthorn hedges, and having some huge burn piles, dug into the ground.  We still have one fire to go, but now we are filling in all the holes, so the farm is starting to look a lot tidier! We will put grass seed over the filled in areas, once the rains come.

Beginning the 2026 breeding program
In the next few days we will yard all our herd and split them into groups to be bred (and not bred).  It will be a big day, so Keryn will give me a hand

Spotlight on
Today we would like to spotlight one of our most special cows, and her newborn baby.

This lady is Phoebe, with her new heifer calf, Penny.  Phoebe has the most incredible temperament and really is a delight to have on the farm. She is genetically right up there, so she will be in our AI team.  We plan to AI her to a really great Australian bull with lots and lots of marbling.  Phoebe has lost her tag, and I must get it replaced.  She deserves to look perfect!

That’s all for this week.  We do hope you enjoy the read.

Cheers

Colin and Keryn
