Our Monday 15th June Blog Post

Please excuse the late post this morning (almost this afternoon)!

Fieldays:
We were SO excited to go to the Fieldays this year, to look at cars, and find a good tree supplier.  Honestly, it really was a waste of time, and was SO disappointing.  There were a number of significant car suppliers who were not attending the show, so to view all vehicles in one place was just a dream.  It would be been easier to go into Hamilton (or Tauranga) and call into each car yard.

There were NO specimen tree suppliers there (or Weeping Willows).  A google search was much better to identify the main players.  We have done that now.

BUT I am not knocking the Fieldays.  It is a huge event which draws huge crowds, and it is a huge financial buzz for the Waikato. I love that!

AND there was a bonus.  I was given a bag, which included a brochure from a supplier who was not at the Fieldays – a farm map creator.  We want to remap our farm, now that we have new fence lines. The pricing is really competitive, and although they are located at Matakana, they are planning to come down to map our farm this week, weather permitting.  I am thrilled!

On the farm:
Bale feeding: The reason for the delayed post this morning is because of the VERY slow time it takes me to feed out each bale of silage, and I fed out this morning before completing the blog post.  As mentioned previously, we bought 72 bales from across the river.  We did not realise the grass was finely cut.  AS soon as the cover is cut off the bale, it just collapses into a heap by the feeder.  I have to hand spread it – and it takes forever!  For the next 70 odd days, it will be the same.  It is so frustrating, but I just have to grin and bare it!  The bonus is that the silage is very clean, and the cows love it.

Tree Bays: They are almost completed, so we need to get Willow Trees planted as soon as possible.  Keryn is away until the end of June, so it will be all go as soon as she is back.

Spotlight on:
We have another Black/Whiteface cow calve this week.  The heifer calf looks so cute with it’s white head with little black patches.

The mum’s name is OLIVE and we asked our grandson to come up with a cool name, starting with O.  He came up with the name OREO – which I would never have thought up, and is absolutely the perfect name.  Well done, grandson Jack!

So this wee girl is Oreo.  Welcome to the farm, sweet girl!

That’s all for this week.  I will make sure I post earlier in the morning, next week.

WE LOVE FEEDBACK!  If you would like to comment, we would be delighted!

Cheers

Colin and Keryn
